Founded in 1947, the Piccolo Teatro di Milano is the first permanent and public theatre in Italy. It is considered an ambassador for the Italian theater culture throughout the world. Founded by Paolo Grassi and Giorgio Strehler, actor and director who oversaw over 200 plays, the theatre stages almost 60 performances per year, covering works by a variety of playwrights distributed all over the world.
The closures of the theatres in Italy, due to the current pandemic situation, has challenged their
cultural activities. A gesture of love from Valentino and Pierpaolo Piccioli that continue to sustain culture by re-opening spaces with the intent to give the Piccolo Teatro di Milano the opportunity to continue its activities and t o preserve its human excellence.
The Piccolo Teatro di Milano is starting a project of digitalization and cataloguing of its renowned atelier that includes over 10.000 pieces, with the goal of creating an interactive archive, accessible not only by seamstresses and costumers, but also by researchers, experts and enthusiasts of the theatre field.
The Piccolo Teatro di Milano was inaugurated as a space that valued freedom of artistic expression and welcomed international performances, while remaining true to its roots and traditions. Its philosophy was to be an “Arts Theater for Everyone” with a social, inclusive and identity purpose, and it continues to stage valuable shows at reasonable prices, attracting a broad and varied audience to its productions.
